Mother’s Day Magic

What makes Mother’s Day so special?

For me, it begins with memories of past celebrations along with the anticipation of a new one. I wonder what little surprises will greet me. Will the kids be on their best behavior or will they be whiny and disagreeable? Will the house be all tidy or will I have to face a sink full of dirty dishes and loads of unwashed laundry?  Will I have to prepare the meal or will the family join in to create a delicious dinner?  Will the kids think to make me a unique gift? What new memories will we create together?

I have been awakened by the cheerful voices of my children bringing me breakfast in bed…..delicious homemade waffles with all the toppings.  My husband loves to give me flowers. I especially love to get yellow roses.  Sometimes he will give me a beautiful piece of jewelry or a “Precious Moments” to add to my collection. He and the kids may barbeque or take me out for ice cream. It’s relaxing to take a walk together or play a game.  A batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies or coconut macaroons hit the spot everytime.  It’s really fun to watch family videos or old family slides (aka family photos on a screen)!  Receiving a homemade card, drawing or painting by one of my kids is a lifetime treasure.  Hugs and saying, “I love you, mom”  are free and nothing can compare!

To be honest, I have experienced some very disappointing Mother’s Days as well.  When my kids seemed to have forgotten me — when they were self-focused. When the family caught a bug.   Or when the workload seemed endless on a day when I thought I was supposed to relax.  Yet, every day that I can share with my children is like Mother’s Day, even if it is hectic or not the most ideal.  Yes, parenting can be challenging and there are endless chores, questions to answer and situations that can leave you feeling inadequate or frustrated.   If you can stop and focus on the main thing, it helps to put things in perspective.  Being a mom is a calling and an honor. To me, it means that my heart is full of love. Love that I can give to my children and love that I receive from them.   And that is the greatest gift of all.
